Welcome and thank you for visiting the Rising Sun Municipal Utilities webpage.
RSMU began operations in June 1939 when the City of Rising Sun purchased the Rising Sun Water and Light Company, a subsidiary of the Associated Electric Company. The city held a special election on May 2nd of that year in which residents voted to approve the purchase of both the Waterworks and the Electric Utility.
In 1955, RSMU expanded its services to include sanitary wastewater collection and the Wastewater Treatment Plant was also constructed. Major renovations were completed to the plant in 2007 to increase capacity, meet federal and state regulations, and improve operations.
In 1997, a new electric substation with twin 7500 KW transformers and a second 300,000 gallon elevated water storage tower were constructed at the north end of the City.
In 2011, the construction of a new 800gpm water well was completed to ensure the City has sufficient capacity for consumption and fire protection.
In 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, the sewer department had a total of 4,192 feet of main sewer line relined.
In 2016, the Wastewater Treatment Plant reconstructed its river bank to protect it from flood erosion. The Electric Department has scheduled three alleyway rebuilds to replace deteriorating poles and outdated hardware. The rebuilds are expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
RSMU is directed by a five-member Utility Service Board. Its members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Each board member serves a four year term. The USB meets the second Wednesday of each month at 5 pm in City Hall.
