RISING SUN, INDIANA—The Indiana Department of Transportation announced a contract award October 17, 2014 for replacement of the State Road 156 bridge over Grants Creek—1.4 miles west of S.R. 56 near the Ohio-Switzerland County line. The structure at North Landing closed yesterday after a hole opened in the bridge deck. The S.R. 156 bridge had been closed last winter when a large hole developed in its deck. INDOT maintenance crews installed large steel sheets at that time in order to restore traffic.

A detour put in place yesterday evening will continue to be in effect until next summer when bridge replacement work has been completed. INDOT’s signed detour reroutes area traffic via S.R. 56 and S.R. 250.

McAlister Excavating of Patriot submitted the lowest of three bids—$ 1,771,369—to obtain the contract award. It is charged with demolishing the existing Grants Creek structure and replacing both the substructure and the superstructure of the existing bridge. Only the foundation will remain in place.

INDOT officials anticipate holding a pre-construction meeting within the next two weeks with McAlister personnel. Demolition of the failed S.R. 156 structure could take place as soon as November, depending on the contractor’s schedule.
