President Bush was the first sitting vice president to be elected president since Martin van Buren in 1836 and he is the second president, after John Adams, to be the father of a president. Bush flew 58 combat missions for the Navy during World War II and was awarded three Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. In June 1943, he became the youngest pilot in the Navy at the time.

Bush was captain of the Yale University baseball team and played in the first two College World Series in 1947 and 1948.

In 1971-72 he was our ambassador to the United Nations. In January 1976, he began one year as director of the CIA. Bush became the country’s 43rd vice president in January 1981. Then in November 1988, he was elected as our 41st president. His presidency will be known for, among other things, for managing a peaceful end to the Cold War and for victory in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq.

In January 2009, the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier was commissioned. And in February 2011, Bush was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President Bush passed away on November 30 at the age of 94.
