Rising Sun High School’s Science Club, consisting of 35 members and sponsored by teacher Andrea Levi, will conduct an Ohio River sweep on Sunday, April 22 beginning at 1 pm according to Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom.  The club has adopted river mile 506-507 (Rising Sun’s riverfront) through the Living Lands and Waters’ Adopt-A-River Mile program.

“We became interested in this activity after visiting the Living Lands & Waters crew when they docked in our area earlier this year,” said Ms. Levi.  “We plan to hold a cleanup each spring and fall.”

Headquartered in East Moline, Illinois, Living Lands & Waters is a 501 (c)(3) environmental organization established in 1998. Since the organization was founded, Living Lands & Waters has grown to be the only “industrial strength” river cleanup organization like it in the world.

Spending up to nine months a year living and traveling on the barge, the Living Lands & Waters’ crew hosts river cleanups, watershed conservation initiatives, workshops, tree plantings and other key conservation efforts.

“I applaud the efforts of Mrs. Levi and the RSHS Science Club,” said Bascom.  “Collectively, they are helping with the upkeep of our city’s greatest public asset.  It’s a great show of community support and civic pride.  The City of Rising Sun welcomes these types of activities from school classes and clubs, church groups, civic organizations or even a group of local citizens who just want to make a difference in the place we all call home.  Because of liability concerns, please keep in mind such activities should be coordinated through the city first.  It’s a simple but necessary process.”
